Great Divide

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the Adventure Cycling Association’s dirt and gravel route from Banff, Alberta, south to the U.S.–Mexico border. This site is my journal of attempting it, finishing it, and photographing along the way.

What Is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Ride?

It is a self-supported mountain bike tour along the spine of the Rockies — mostly dirt and gravel, with enough pavement to remind you that civilization is still out there somewhere. Riders start in Banff and work their way south. Some race it. Some tour it. I rode it as a long expedition, one day at a time.

Why I became obsessed with attempting the ride

I am a veteran — Army, Special Forces, Blackhawk. Somewhere between service and the years after, the idea of riding the Divide lodged itself and would not leave. This paragraph is a placeholder for the real “why.” I will write it properly when I am ready.

My connection to Warrior Expeditions

Warrior Expeditions is a veterans outdoor and expedition nonprofit. I rode the Great Divide in connection with their program. They help veterans take on long outdoor journeys — hiking, paddling, cycling — as a way to move forward. That connection matters to this ride; the details of how and when belong in a longer piece I still need to write.

Art of the Divide

Art of the Divide is the photography collection that came out of this ride. The shop is curated — finished works you can hang on a wall. The journey pages on this site hold the documentary photographs and the day’s story. Browse the collection at Art of the Divide.
